The Bee – Portable Audio System

With the BG 20 Cross I built a portable audio system on wheels. But it was not suitable for all occasions, because it’s too big and too heavy. Accordingly I planned a smaller system, which could be carried by hand. Equal to my other systems I relied on Visaton drivers and the simulation software Boxsim. This time I challanged myself and tried to develop the crossover on my own. Nevertheless I consulted the Visaton forum to discuss and optimize my draft. Finally I finished my construction in spring 2013. You can see the result in the image below:

The Bee consists of MDF as all other audio systems I presented. The surface material is mainly robust plastic foil (yellow) sealed by a frame of aluminium profiles. The rest is painted black or covered by black acrylic.

Beside the drivers and the crossover I had to solve some other problems. There were questions like “Which amp should I use?”, “What battereis should I use?” and “Where should I embed all this stuff?”. To make it short, here are the answers:

  • Amplifier: Lepai LP-808
  • Batteries: 10 x Sanyo Eneloop AA with holder

However I made the mistake to try a small lead-acid battery first. Its maximal current wasn’t enough to feed the amplifier.

Now where did I embed these parts? For the amplifier I integrated a opening covered with brushed black acrylic:

On the other side I integrated a spring-loaded drawer with enough space for the battery holder:
